Nestled in the
mountains of western Maine, Pietree Orchard is a
family owned business offering a variety of
apples as well as pumpkins, squash and gourds.
The orchard was operated by the McSherry family
for over 75 years and offered for sale in 2007.
The Maine family that purchased the property
intends to keep it a working orchard.
Pietree Orchard covers both sides of the
Waterford Road in Sweden, Maine. It is easily
accessible from Bridgton, Norway, Fryeburg,
Lovell and North Conway, New Hampshire.
The original landscape has changed with the
addition of storage buildings and a new home for
the migrant workers. The farmstand has cold
storage under the building to keep our apples
fresh and crisp until late fall. The entire
property was fenced to keep deer and moose from
destroying the trees and fruit.
The trees on the north side of the orchard have
been treated organically for the past three
years. We are allowed to sell these apples as
“organically grown”. The south orchard apples
are grown conventionally meaning we eliminate
any pests as they appear with approved
treatments.
Scott Miller, “The Apple Doc”, is the production
manager and resident beekeeper. He has been
working in this orchard for several years.
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension
and the staff at Highmoor Farm are resources for
the growth and development of the orchard.
The trees that Scott and Margaret planted during
the first year of operation have begun to
produce fruit. We had honeycrisp, black oxford,
cox’s orange pippins, brock, pinova, golden
delicious, gingergold, northern spy, red spy,
winesap in addition to our macintosh, cortland
and macouns The peaches were a huge hit
with the local peach enthusiasts.
We had our first pick your own strawberries in
June 2011. The plan will be to expand the
strawberry fields to fill the demand for locally
grown berries. We also planted Seascape
strawberries, which extended the berry season
into fall.
Pietree presses and bottles our own
unpasteurized cider for sale at the farmstand.
Bryce and Campbell return every spring to help
us with the fruit and vegetables.
So if you are looking for something to do in the
fall, come on over to Pietree Orchard and check
us out, taste some locally grown products, meet
our wonderful staff and enjoy Jesse’s brick oven
baked bread and pizza.
We hope to see you at Pietree, where the scenery
is spectacular, the apples delicious,
and the staff ready, willing and able to please!
